Our Mandate

Relevant legislative and policy mandates

Amazwi South African Museum of Literature (Amazwi) has a role in raising consciousness about freedom of expression, artistic creativity, academic freedom, non-discrimination and citizens’ rights to basic education including adult education.

The museum is a safe space where people can relax and enjoy all genres of cultural expression

Amazwi is governed by the Cultural Institutions Act, Act No. 119 of 1998, as amended, and operates under the jurisdiction of a Council appointed by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture. Amazwi is listed
as a schedule 3A national public entity in terms of the Public Finance Management Act, Act No. 1 of 1999, as amended.
